United out of the Anagram Records Trophy on penalties......

Catholic found themselves at Queens Road for the second time in two season's, at the same stage in the same trophy!!
A semi-final spot on offer, after a bucket load of rain the previous day, the warm sun most of matchday dried the pitch out a treat as the game went ahead on a sticky but playable surface.

The early chances fell to the visitors who started the more sprightly. Harrison Day found his way into the box but his early shot was blocked, and five minutes later, Aaron Baldwin cut inside on his left foot to warm the keepers hands low down to his left.

A flurry of corners for United came to nothing, although the home side were far from comfortable or settled in the early exchanges.

The opening goal fell to James Warder. Dan Williams, on the left, fired in a low curling shot-come-cross toward the back post which had the keeper scrambling to parry, but that parry fell to the feet of Warder who tapped home under pressure.

With ten minutes to play, Woody Wells was brought into action, dealing acrobatically to a low drive to his near post to turn it wide for a corner.

An enthralling first half ended with United still in the ascendancy, with the hosts still, seemingly, unable to deal with the speed of the game and perhaps the longer than usual grass length.

HALF TIME: Chipperfield Corinthians 0-1 Catholic United

The hosts started the second half the better, and immediately took the game to United, who for this half were playing up the slope of the pitch. Woody Wells picked a shot out of the air early on and ten minutes later, a ball over the top found a Chipperfield forward, who shot wide of the right hand post.

Against the run of play, Day picked up the ball from deep and played in Thomas Kearney, and his ball across the face found Dan Williams who tapped the ball into the net.

United found themselves in the same position last season, two goals to the good, but there was always the sense that a third goal was needed to kill this game off. The next goal though, came the way of the hosts, with fifteen minutes of the game remaining. A deep cross to the back post found a Chippo player who's header looped high toward the back post and landed over the goaline.

The goal was the impetus the home side needed and despite Catholic keeping the hosts keeper busy, the all important third goal never came. Instead, the equaliser came with minutes remaining. A cross from the right hand side found the head of the attacker leaving Woody with no chance. The referee signalled the end of the game to take the match to penalties.
