Both teams huffed and puffed in the sun but needed something special to break the deadlock.....

Runwell Sports and Catholic United played out a bore draw on Saturday, with the only highlight of note being the yellow ball in the sky appearing for the first time in ages!!

With neither side having anything to play for in the league except for pride, both teams left their shooting boots at home and it was pretty much agreed that even if a further 90 minutes was played, they would still have cancelled each other out.

Needless to say, early possession count was in favour of the visitors, but the only shot of note early on came from skipper Mike Sammut. Aaron Baldwin and Ben Burrows were getting into good positions down the flanks though defensively Sports were equal to what was being thrown at them. Mid-way through the half Baldwin let fly from the right but his shot was palmed away for a corner. Joe Burton was also letting fly from outside the area thought the ball was rising all the way over the bar.

At the other end, United keeper Woody Wells was rarely tested in the first half, with one shot aimed straight into his body. Working well with the defence he was able to get good distance to his clearances.

The sun continued to shine for the second half and for a change, it remained warm for the remaining 45 minutes, although the wind had risen slightly and was pushing the ball down to the goal of Woody Wells.
It wouldn't be long before Wells was brought into action, a bouncing pass, made tricky with the wind, forced Wells to control the ball under pressure, but thankfully cleared his lines.

James Warder had the chance of the half but pushed the ball into the keeper, then followed this up with a header that flew over the bar. Burrows found space just inside the area but skewed his shot wide of the right hand post.

The introduction of Frank Craik offered pace down the left and against a tiring defence gave United a means to push for an opener. As much as Craik pressed, at times he was closed down quickly by two Sports players but managed to link up well with Thomas Kearney who's crosses were causing some problems in the box though no green & white shirt was able to convert.

The game finished, quite appropriately in the middle of the park, both sides accepting a point.
