Points shared on a frustrating afternoon for manager Simon Thomas.....

Manager Simon Thomas believed it was a case of two dropped points against a battling Toby FC side that were trying to kickstart their season. It was another game where the Essex Bhoys conceded the opening goal, but like last weekend, battled back into the game.

Without central midfield pairing, Mike Sammut and Tom Elliott, Thomas drafted in Joe Burton and Dan Rogers, handing the captain's armband to Thomas Kearney, himself in great form since the start of the season.

With possession being shared in the opening 10 minutes, the deadlock was broken shortly after. The ball was moved out to the left, the resulting cross to the near post was jumped on by the forward and despite a despairing dive by Woody Wells, the ball found its way over the line. The hosts grew into the game and some purposeful balls into the front men were being rewarded with some good crosses and a number of corners. It was one of those purposeful forward passes from Lewis Bartrip into Tom Kearney, who moved it out wide to Aaron Clark and it was Clark who found Frank Craik who jinking run open space for a rasping right foot shot that gave visiting stopper, Adam French, no chance. The ball flew past his right side and cannoned off the post before hitting the back of the net.

Moments later, Craik received the ball on the left and his drive and pass into the box found Tom Kearney, but his right foot shot on the run was saved by the left foot of stopper Adam French. With ten minutes remaining in the half, United took the lead thanks to midfielder Dan Rogers. Rogers received the ball outside the area, and moving it to his left foot, he fired a low drive which evaded the left hand of French between the sticks.

The majority of the second half was a game that flowed back and forth and was great for the neutral but always felt there was a goal to come at some point. A goal for the hosts would have settled the game and for the visitors, would have given those in attendance a good finish to the game. With fifteen minutes remaining, the question was answered. Toby on the attack, good interplay produced some space and the Brewers forward sliding right foot shot was too much for Woody Wells.

Both sides pushed for a winner and in the dying seconds Tom Kearney nipped the ball off the foot of the Brewers defender who was in the process of clearing the ball, but without the ball, caught Kearney. Despite the referee blowing the whistle, it was to signal the end of the game over that of a decision for a penalty. Outraged, Lewis Bartrip remonstrated with the referee, and received a post-match red card as players were shaking hands.
